A Moment of Serenity: Milford Sound, New Zealand

With all the angst and intensity in the news these days, I decided to post a photo of somewhere beautiful. This image makes me feel calmer every time I look at it.

This is Milford Sound in the UNESCO-listed Fjordland National Park on the South Island, New Zealand. Uwe and I visited New Zealand for six weeks in February/March. Check out the sailboat: it gives some perspective on how massive the fjord walls are!

  1. In 1977, I was in grade seven, instead of enjoying the last week of primary school, the family travelled to NZ for Dad’s medical school reunion. Milford Sound was one of the spots we visited. It was cold and wet in December and I wondered why anyone would want to live in New Zealand. On Christmas Day it was 2 °C while at home in Brisbane it was a balmy and sultry 30 °C.

    1. Oh my God Gary, your story is so funny! We visited Milford Sound on a rare sunny day! I could easily imagine it as damp, dreamy, and dripping with fog and rain. Just as you must have experienced it….
